Thought's on Kimbo Fight
General MMA
I started this post to see what you guys thought about the Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson fight that occurred last night. I will add my two cents(which isn't worth alot) and I am curious as to how you
all saw it.
First off, the best fight of the night was the Robbie Lawler vs Scott Smith in my opinion. Those two batteled it out and both took some serious shots and kept going. I thought it was typical however that the crowd continued booing because it wasn't a non stop swinging for the fences fight.
Now moving on to the Kimbo/Thompson match. What a disgusting display of MMA from both fighters. I felt like I was watching some cage fighting show that recruits it's fighters from the crowd who is watching it. Both of these hacker's ground games sucked BAD!!!! There was no appearance of jiu jitsu technique by either fighter. When they weren't rolling around on the ground and were wobbling, I mean standing, Kimbo's punches looked about as accurate as an amateurs. On the flip side James Thompson's defense was that of the Taliban, weak and almost non existent. Lastly both of these fighters cardio was f'ing terrible. Enough said.

I guess the only thing I can add is this, why didn't anyone in Thompson's camp think to drain that ear like a month ago? Maybe they were afraid of infecting it, but you knew when he walked into the cage that the thing was going to be broken open by fights end. And did I hear somewhere that there was almost a post-fight brawl involving Kimbo? I believe it, probably someone told him the harsh reality that if he fought anyone good, he wouldn't last long.

I wish I had seen the fight but I didn't. I will however believe what you have told me. I mean c'mon, seriously? Kimbo Slice as an MMA Professional. He's 32. Who could possibly become a real MMA threat when they start training in their 30's? I know, I know, he was a street fighter for a long time but, as most of you know, being a good street fighter does not mean you will easily transition into MMA.

As far as any jiu jitsu on the whole card.... there was none! Elite XC did just what they wanted... provide fights for the average joe to watch, not the educated MMA fan. Every one of those fights pitted fighters against eachother that have no ground game. They were all strikers. Thats what sells now. Funny example of the fighters jiu jitsu knowledge, Gina Carrano saying she had a go go plata??? Some fights were stopped early (kimbo/Thompson, Lawler/Smith) to try to prove a weak point that MMA is a "safe sport". And last but not least whats the deal with standing up Thompson while he's dropping elbows on Kimbo? Again, making it fun for fans who need to see guys stand and throw haymakers. P.S. the production value sucked.

Yeah I agree that the production value sucked and was very cheesy. Your also right about making Thompson stand when he was dropping elbows on Kimbo. That threw me for a loop.

I just want to add that I seriously hope that anyone who was watching for the first time also saw the Faber/Pulver fight on Sunday. A true MMA fight that was also very exciting. 5 Rounds of 2 guys letting it all hang out.

Kimbo Sucks! I just cant believe this thing was even on TV! Over the course of the week leading up this, its sad that I was asked more often "are u gonna watch the Kimbo fight" than I have ever been asked about any of the other REAL fights! Thats sad!
